Meet Shelby Moyer, one of the image.works copy team’s most versatile writers! Originally from the Seattle area, she’s now settled in her husband Cody’s home state of Wisconsin, where they recently bought their first home. When Shelby’s not at work, you can find her thrifting/antiquing, reading or exploring the outdoors with her dogs, Maizie and Teddy.
Describe what you do on a day-to-day basis.
My role is unique in that I work with clients, but I’m also very involved in image.works’ own marketing efforts. So I toggle between working closely with my clients to deliver marketing copy that elevates their brand, and working on copy that elevates image.works. On the client side, I’m helping clients reach their goals with marketing that resonates with their audience. And on the image.works side, it’s so rewarding to think about how we can best communicate with and serve our clients. I get to use both the strategic and creative sides of my brain, which is the best part.
What did you do before coming to image.works?
My career started in print journalism, actually! My first job was as a business and agriculture reporter at a daily newspaper in Washington, and then I was an education reporter for a daily paper in Missouri. From there I moved into a role as a magazine editor, where I specialized in long-form profiles and fashion for a magazine group in the Seattle area. A couple times a year we’d do these massive editorial fashion shoots with hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of couture clothing and the most incredible models, makeup artists, hair stylists and photographers. It was so much fun, and I had a ton of creative freedom.
So many of the skills I learned as a journalist translated to my work at image.works. Marketing thrives on storytelling, a clear message, organization and strong relationships. I’ve loved every twist and turn my career has taken me on, and I feel lucky to have gotten the opportunities that I’ve had.
Any interesting work-related or client success stories?
One of my clients refreshed their branding and now they use the term “audaciously authentic” to guide the tone of their marketing. It’s so original and clever, and I’ve had the privilege of helping to rework their website copy, launch announcements about their brand refresh and develop other marketing touchpoints with this new look and feel. They’re wonderful to work with, and I love how bold their brand has become. It makes my job super fun.
What is the most “Wisconsin” thing about you?
Since moving here, I’ve noticed that when I speak some of my vowels have gotten longer, and I say “Ope!” a lot more.
If you could learn a new skill, what would it be?
It would be amazing to speak another language.
What does leadership mean to you?
So many things, but if I had to summarize with a handful of words, I would say: kindness, thoughtfulness, patience, clear communication, creativity, cheerleader, advocate, mentor.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome in your life?
In our early to mid-20s, my husband and I struggled with mental health issues that went untreated or misdiagnosed. There were a few pretty rough years. Mental health is tricky, because there’s still some stigma around it. And unlike a physical injury, it’s invisible to the outside world, so people don’t always understand how challenging it is. Thankfully, we’re in a much better place now, and we learned a lot about how to be a better partner and friend.
What activities do you do outside of work?
During COVID, I got into painting. Some of my paintings are so bad (think of a deer that looks like a cross between a horse and a kangaroo), but some have turned out really well! It’s nice to have a hobby that’s visually creative, since so much of my day revolves around writing and editing.
Anything else you want our clients to know about you?
I’m passionate about what I do. I put a lot of thought and care into every project, and I truly love playing a small part in helping my clients’ businesses thrive.
