Let’s face it – raising money for your educational institution isn’t an easy task. And it’s made even more difficult when you consider the fact that your school only serves a select group – meaning that unlike large charities and organizations that can seek support nationwide, you’re much more limited in the scope of people from whom you can reasonably request financial contributions.
For this reason, donor retention is more than just beneficial for your school – it’s downright essential. But what can you do to encourage donors to keep coming back? Simply follow these tips:
1. Make it a point to thank your donors.
At the very least, your supporters deserve a nice email conveying your appreciation – but, if possible, a handwritten note or phone call would be even better. Whatever you’re able to do, just make sure you’re doing something to acknowledge donors’ gifts and show your gratitude.
2. Follow up with progress reports.
Donors may be hesitant to give again if they’re unaware of the impact their contribution has made, so follow up with them on a regular basis to describe all the good works you’re doing thanks to their gifts. With proof that their funds are making a real difference, they’ll likely be more inclined to offer additional support in the future.
3. Treat donors like VIPs.
Few things are more enticing than feeling like you’re part of an elite club – so use this fact to your advantage in your interactions with donors. Consider offering them special perks at any events you may throw or sneak peeks of upcoming changes. Hopefully, the special status their support affords them will tempt them to give again.
4. Customize your content.
When it’s time to reach out to your target market for a new fundraising event, don’t send the same message to everyone. You should create separate communications for those who have donated before and those who have never donated. When contacting the former, let it be known that you appreciate their previous support. Also, consider including a brief reminder of what they’ve helped you accomplish in the past, as well as a glimpse of your upcoming goals.
